Next Optimism Mission for WakeUp? We got it! Decentralized rollup-as-a-service

WakeUp Labs has been selected to lead four Optimism missions. We're excited to share the third one with you: developing a decentralized rollup. The previous articles covered the Zero Knowledge Toolkit and Superchain Accounts.

The Third mission.

Decentralized rollup-as-a-service

What was it about?

A proposal was made to create a decentralized Rollup-as-a-Service (RaaS) network to facilitate the realization of this mission. Unlike existing RaaS providers, which often possess barriers and lock-ins, this network aims to standardize features and democratize the provider role, allowing for seamless switching between providers.

WakeUp’s Proposal

The first phase, Cloud Rollup as a Service, we will focus on creating a platform enabling users to effortlessly generate their own rollup on the cloud. This involves thorough research to determine the optimal infrastructure strategy and testing of roll-op and other existing OP Stack tools. Deliverables planned include comprehensive documentation, infrastructure definitions, and the implementation of roll-op on cloud, or alternatively, an ad-hoc solution. Additionally, a CLI will be developed to offer rollup creation as a service, along with the integration of a block explorer feature and a user-friendly Dev Console for managing cloud rollup services.

In the subsequent phase, a Decentralized Marketplace, we aim to maximize decentralization in the interaction between RaaS clients and vendors by establishing a marketplace. This involves researching and specifying the functionalities of the marketplace smart contract, including features like Escrow, Payments, and Key reset/vendor change. Following this, we will create the marketplace smart contract, incorporating payment capabilities and the ability to reset keys for vendor changes. We will also design and implement a user-friendly dApp to facilitate interaction with the marketplace. Anyways, we would like to point out that the Optimism Council reviewed our roadmap and proposed to remove the marketplace feature in order to put more efforts in the scalability ones. That's something we’ll analyze and define when the research phase kicks off.

In the Cloud Service Improvements and Scaling Features phase, we will be made updates to the cloud service to support high demand. This includes implementing recommendations from research and discovery, as well as addressing any issues uncovered during the project's development.
