Unlocking Impact: How We Helped Optimize RetroPGF Evaluation on Optimism
Over the past few months, the WakeUp Labs team worked closely with the Optimism Collective to reimagine how impact is measured and made visible across RetroPGF.
We’ve shipped a live platform, published a full report, and delivered a refreshed framework that makes impact evaluation clearer, more usable, and easier to scale.

See the platform in action
To bring the experience to life, we created two walkthrough videos:
See how contributors, badgeholders, and curious newcomers can explore Retro Funding data clearly and intuitively.
Go behind the scenes and discover how rounds, categories, and criteria are added and managed through the admin dashboard.
If you're curious about the full scope of work and detailed milestones, check out the mission thread here.
What was the challenge?
RetroPGF is an essential tool for rewarding public goods work in the Optimism ecosystem—but the process of evaluating impact has often been opaque, fragmented, or hard to follow for newcomers.
This mission aimed to change that by:
Refreshing the evaluation criteria and framework
Building an open, user-friendly interface
Creating space for contributors, badgeholders, and evaluators to engage more meaningfully
Why it matters
Making impact visible isn’t just about UI polish or data entry. It’s about unlocking trust, reducing friction, and helping the best work rise to the surface.
By delivering this platform and framework, we’re giving Optimism’s community a shared reference point for better funding decisions—and setting the stage for future improvements.
What’s Next
The next steps include final outreach to governance stakeholders and partners, continued onboarding for Badgeholders, and progressing discussions for the formal adoption of the platform by the Optimism ecosystem. We’re already collaborating with ecosystem teams to ensure long-term adoption, training, and iteration.
🙏 Thanks to everyone who gave feedback, attended sessions, and tested the platform. This mission may be complete — but the path to accessible, transparent public goods funding is just getting started.
🔴 If you're a badgeholder, builder, or community steward—we’d love to connect. Get in touch at hello@wakeuplabs.io or follow us on X or LinkedIn.
